Internships

Our internship programme is ideal for those looking to gain new skills, try out different responsibilities, and learn in a real-world, supportive environment. Interns are involved in the day-to-day running of our eco-events site, leading teams of volunteers, and get hands-on experience across several parts of the organisation.

What to Expect

  • A full induction and on-the-job training during your first week
  • Continuous support from a dedicated trustee mentor
  • Regular check-ins with your internship manager for guidance and feedback
  • Experience living and working in a close-knit, off-grid community

Internship programme structure

At Green & Away, we tailor our internships to your skills, areas of interest and what you’d like to develop. You could run one long project, or a portfolio of smaller projects, all with a focus on sustainability, ecotourism and outdoor living.

Project Examples:

  • Creating a strategy for our charity
  • Designing and painting educational boards and signage
  • Conducting a carbon-footprint analysis
  • Supporting social media content planning
  • Designing and delivering workshops for volunteers

Alongside your individual project, you will take on responsibilities in one or more of our core departments. You are advised to read the departmental descriptions and think about which parts interest you, as well as what skills you have and could lend to us this summer season.

Departments:

  • Hospitality & Ecotourism
  • Project & Events Management
  • Environmental Education

Internships are a great route for those who enjoy teamwork, want more structure, and would benefit from set tasks, clear guidance, and learning new skills from scratch. This pathway is well suited to people who may not yet have a specialised skillset but are enthusiastic, motivated, and eager to grow.

Departmental Descriptions

Hospitality & Ecotourism

Throughout the summer we have guests staying on-site with us in either our cosy bell tents, or standard camping tents. We’re looking for interns with excellent people skills to welcome guests onto the site, assist with running our bar and cafe, and manage our on-site accommodation throughout the season.

  • Responsibilities include administering accommodation booking, leading teams of volunteers to turn around accommodation, organise cleaning of the facilities, running the bar and café as well as maintaining the wider aesthetics of the site.
  • You will also be responsible for liaising with volunteers, guests and the Events, Office, and Catering departments to ensure that everyone who stays at Green & Away feels welcome and taken care of.
  • This is perfect for anyone with a keen eye for detail who is passionate about providing excellent standards of customer service and care.
  • You will gain valuable experience in sustainable tourism, team leading, hospitality and bar skills, and stock control.

Project & Events Management

This isn’t your usual office job. Our field office is in a modified caravan overlooking our beautiful eco-events site, and the role is hands-on and varied. You won’t just sit at a desk — you’ll lead morning meetings around the centre circle, move around the camp to liaise with team leaders and volunteers, and oversee everything happening on-site. Working in the office will give you a great insight into project management and you will play a key role in running our eco-events venue and environmental education charity. This role is ideal for someone who is approachable, organised, and proactive, with strong communication skills and attention to detail.

  • Responsibilities include overseeing day-to-day running of the camp, including office administration, financial tasks, ordering supplies and managing volunteer rotas
  • Welcome and induct new arrivals, including volunteers, guests, and event delegates.
  • Support event coordination for 2–3 day events hosting 20–140 guests, assisting with bookings, planning, and volunteer management.
  • You will also take the lead on organising events such as our annual Open Day, to showcase Green & Away to our local community and nearby groups, businesses and organisations.
  • You could also contribute to designing and implementing marketing campaigns and social media content with guidance from the Green & Away team.
  • You will gain experience in office administration, project management and volunteer organisation. You will also have the opportunity to learn the intricacies of running a charity and managing a successful events venue. You will gain problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills in a hands-on, outdoor environment.

Environmental Education

As an environmental education charity, creating opportunities for learning is a key part of our work. As part of the volunteer experience, we dedicate one afternoon each week to talks, workshops and shared learning sessions. We are looking for someone to take the lead on curating and coordinating this programme, inspiring volunteers and guests and deepening understanding of environmental issues.

  • In this role you will have the opportunity to curate and coordinate a six-week educational programme focused on environmental issues, sustainability and ecological awareness.
  • You will plan and facilitate weekly talks, workshops or learning sessions, delivered by yourself, volunteers, or external contributors.
  • There is also opportunity to develop and implement educational materials around the site, sharing information about Green & Away’s sustainable practices and charitable work
  • This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about environmental education, proactive and confident taking initiative, with excellent communication skills and an enthusiasm for sharing knowledge in an engaging and inclusive way.
