Residencies
Our residency programme is designed for individuals who already have a specific skillset and want the time, space, and support to develop and showcase their craft within a unique environmental setting.
Residencies are more independent, practical, and self-directed than internships, with residents taking the lead on creating, making, building or developing something substantial for the site or organisation.
What to Expect
- Significant creative or practical independence
- A trustee mentor to support you throughout the season
- Opportunities to develop your craft while contributing to the smooth running of our sustainable venue
- A chance to create something lasting that benefits our community
Suitable Skills for Residencies
- Art and creative installation
- Cooking and baking
- Woodworking or carpentry
- Technical site maintenance
- Writing and poetry
- Sustainable systems, fixing, repairing, or making
Residents should feel confident leading their own project and bringing an existing talent or craft to the organisation.
Residency Departments
Residencies typically fall within one of the following areas.
Catering & Sustainable Food Management
The field kitchen is central to life at Green & Away, and this role is a brilliant opportunity for someone with an existing interest or experience in food and catering to further develop their skills in a practical, self-directed way. You will take the lead on running our on-site kitchen, while gaining insight into sustainable and ethical catering at scale.
- You will lead the planning and preparation of vegetarian and vegan meals for around 30 people between events and up to 200 during events, with the freedom to develop menus, refine systems and explore sustainable food practices.
- You will also have the opportunity to assist the kitchen managers with organising volunteers, developing rotas and placing orders with our local and organic suppliers.
- Experience of working with food is desirable but not essential. You would gain a qualification in food hygiene and safety as well as practical experience in managing dietary requirements and allergies, maintaining a hygienic and tidy kitchen and sourcing sustainable and seasonal produce and the opportunity to undertake food (research) related projects.
- If you have a passion for food and cooking, a high level of organisation and great people skills then this residency is for you!

You will also have the opportunity to install and maintain our biomass boiler and solar panels, as well as plumbing and electrics.
- As an eco-friendly site, we try to reduce buying new things as much as possible and so you will have lots of opportunities to practise your repair and DIY skills.
- You will need an excellent attitude to safely and must be comfortable with both solo work and being part of a team.
Artist in Residence
Green & Away offers an artist residency for the duration of the summer season. This is an opportunity for an emerging artist to develop and demonstrate their creativity in a unique environmental setting, with independence to explore their own ideas while contributing to the site.
- You will have the chance to create an interesting environmental, ecological, or land art piece, working with natural or recycled materials, which will be either permanent or present for the duration of the season and which will add to the atmosphere of the site.
- You will gain valuable experience sharing and discussing your work with volunteers and visitors, collaborating on creative or educational activities, and building confidence in public-facing artistic practice.
- This residency is a great opportunity for an artist interested in ecology, sustainability and place-based work, who is comfortable working independently and eager to contribute something meaningful to our site.
