The Green & Away Team

Green & Away is a registered charity and company limited by guarantee and is run by its “Permanent Council” – a mix of its trustees and workers who have particular skills and have been with us for several years.

Helen Cranston is Green & Away’s Co-ordinator. She runs a nutritional therapy practice in Stroud and also works at Penny Brohn Cancer Care (formerly the Bristol Cancer Help Centre). She has an Army background and served in the Royal Signals and found the best parts were being on exercise in the countryside. She recovered from ME by taking a dietary approach which led to an interest in the power of food to heal and then trained in Nutritional Medicine.

Patrick Andrews works as a business trouble-shooter and occasional seminar leader. In the past he has worked as a bellboy in a hotel in France, a corporate lawyer, general manager of a Russian aircraft design company, a mergers and acquisitions specialist and an adviser to a fair trade company. He now has a passion for corporate accountability.

Jacob Butler is a technician at a Liverpool secondary school. He first came to Green & Away as a child with his mother Rosa many years ago and has graduated from chopping vegetables, through organising children's meals to now overseeing the solar lighting installation and being our computer advisor.

Rosa Butler first came to an event organised by us in 1993, and has attended every year since then. She helps run the kitchen, which includes planning the meals, ordering and buying the food, having responsibility for lunches and baking cakes. She works part-time for a small community in Liverpool fulfilling a similar role. She also teaches dancing several times a week, including a class run by the Primary Care Trust.

Kevin Cranston took early retirement from the Army in 1996, having reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. During his military career he served in a variety of posts mostly related to Army Aviation. He is a Management Consultant advising companies on how to work more efficiently and reduce their environmental impact. He tries to incorporate what he learns during the summer events into the companies he works with. He is a Green Party member of Stroud Town Council. He is also Treasurer and holds the Bar License for Green & Away.

Joy Davenport lives in Devon where she is the Play Officer for Plymouth City Council. At Green and Away she can be found all over the site (Jill of all trades maybe?) often hidden in composting toilet or lacing canvas. This year though she has got a proper job as Dina’s apprentice working in the light industrial area looking after all the Green & Away equipment and tools. Occasionally she finds some young people on site and they get down to some good old fashion play activities den building, tree climbing, craft activities etc.

Rachel Hembery has been involved with Green and Away since 1992 and works as an environmental consultant to organisations that are trying to source their products in an ethical way. Working for Ethical Change and based in mid Wales, Rachel has worked on various responsible trade issues including environmental labelling, the importation of wild bulbs from Europe, carbon sequestration, local food links and responsible procurement of forest products.

Dina Jung has been a Design and Technology teacher for over 20 years, teaching both 11-18 year olds and adults. As well as her teaching qualifications, she gained an M.Sc. in Design and Manufacture at John Makepeace's innovative college in Dorset and her City & Guilds in cabinet making at London Metropolitan University. She maintains Green & Away's equipment and tools, and runs craft workshops such as pewter casting and green woodworking for conference participants.

Peter Lang is one of the founders of Green & Away, was its co-ordinator for ten years, and is chair of Green & Away’s Board of Trustees. He works professionally as a freelance environmental consultant, researcher, events organiser, lecturer, journalist and press officer. He is the London Representative and Events Director for Resurgence Magazine, and is a member of the board of the London Pension Funds Authority. He is a former adviser to the Green Deputy Mayor of London, former press officer to the UK Green Group in the European Parliament, and is the author of books on money and ethical investment. He regularly lectures and writes about money, particularly its environmental and social impacts.

Ritchie Maille has worked with Green & Away since its early years and is mostly on site during set-up and take-down. He is particularly skilled at sorting out structures which haven’t gone up right. He is a builder, antique dealer and recycler.

David McCaw (“the Shaman Chef”) has worked as a chef in kitchens all over the world from Sydney to Switzerland. He has cooked for famous film stars at upmarket resorts, and later specialised in being a “kitchen doctor” – revamping failing restaurant and hotel kitchens. In recent years he has turned his skills from traditional gourmet restaurant food to gourmet healthy food. He runs Green & Away’s kitchen with Rosa Butler.

Justin Moran is one of Green & Away's 'Jack of all trades', and is currently working with a Turkish environmental charity, helping to regenerate a rural mountain village in North-West Turkey through designing and building an ecological education centre. During conferences you can mostly find him working in The Rising Sunflower, our onsite pub, but he his often sub-contracted by H2Ohms, part of the Lang plumbing, electricity and telecoms group, who deal with the site infrastructure at Green & Away.

Dr Mike Munro Turner (“Mike the Mentor”) maintains this website and also encourages organisations to send teams of volunteers to help build, run and take down the Green & Away village. The rest of the year he is a leadership coach and mentor working with senior executives in the public, private and NGO sectors. He is Senior Partner with Jericho Partners and also works with the School of Coaching.

Mark Whitaker works in Brighton running the office of a small charity that supports development projects in rural Zambia. Previously he worked for the Soil Association for nine years, organising training events for new and experienced organic farmers and growers. He has volunteered with Green & Away since summer 2004, including helping to build some of the more organic structures on the site with hazel and canvas and working in the garden. Mark coordinates the recruitment of our volunteers.
