Biodiversity at BransfordGreen & Away is now hugely fortunate in occupying what is probably a unique field in the UK. While most camps and festivals set up in a field just covered in grass, Green & Away’s site in Worcestershire is full of a wide range of trees, shrubs and bushes. The field was formerly the “stock borders” for the adjoining nursery: that is it holds specimen plants from which cuttings were regularly taken for growing on for sale as garden plants. The result is a field full of extremely bushy plants providing a wide range of colour, shape and texture, with berries which come into season at different times. The bushes provide a habitat for a wide range of insects, birds and animals. And one of the joys for conference participants and those of us running the site is the continual discovery of different species to be found there. In addition, the farm itself is run on broadly organic principles, and always has been. Thus it is not a farm which was converted to large scale chemical agriculture, and then converted back to organic. It is a farm which still has its numerous woods and copses, areas of wildlife and variety of crops. It maintains its feel of mixed farming, in balance with nature – and thus we share the farm with a wide variety of other creatures. Some are beautiful: some may be inconvenient, but they are a feast for the eye and an example of what farming should be like.
